January 2010 update from Stephanie and Mike
Dear SBI® 2010 Albuquerque Conference participants: Greetings and best wishes for a productive New Year! Here are some updates & details for our February 2010 conference & some timely suggestions for making your conference a memorable event:
1. Please be sure to register ASAP for the conference on-line and indicate your event/meal attendance to ensure our numbers are accurate. Payment may be made either via credit card or by check mailed to our Treasurer Jeff Shields. [Click here for details.]
2. Please be sure to reserve your hotel accommodations at the Hyatt Regency. The early bird guaranteed rate expires on January 23rd!
3. Your SBI® conference planning team is delighted to be able to extend our thanks for all the early registrations at our elegant Hyatt Regency hotel and for all your early on-line Conference registrations. Please remember the dinner reservations for the Sandia Casino and Resort are on a first come basis!
4. We have a full schedule of presentations, workshops, Best Practices, receptions, keynote speakers, student paper presentations, POY award presentations, meetings and awards; and this year all the pre-conference workshops are included with your registration!
5. We have completed our final presentation schedule and a copy of the schedule will be emailed to each official registrant and will be posted on the website.
We look forward to seeing you in glorious Albuquerque, NM for our best ever 34th Annual Small Business Institute® conference.

November 25, 2009 2010 Conference Update
Dear Albuquerque 2010 Authors, Co-Authors, Presenters, Friends, Students, SBI®ers and wonderful Colleagues!
We are very excited about your attendance at the Albuquerque 2010 Conference- and want to remind you about all the events and opportunities at the conference! I just bought my airplane tickets and happily urge you to book the Hyatt Hotel and your Airplane flight as soon as you can!
Our pre-conference workshops Thursday morning February 18th include some incredibly beneficial learning propositions! Learn how you can optimize funding potential in Dr. Roberta Rosenberg’s “Grants” workshop. Take in the Legal Expertise of Dr. Joseph Bell, Dr. Joe Geiger (and yours truly, Bardwell) in a comprehensive legal and financial issues workshop. We will have SBI® past presidents present the best way to create an effective SBI® program at your University and develop the full potential of our renowned student consulting program. Master SBI® Directors Kirk Heriot and Bruce Kemelgor will each present pre-conference workshops and Dr. Leo Simpson will present a special workshop “All about POY [Projects of the Year]” to describe the student consulting case Project of the Year competition!
Our Grand Opening Luncheon Thursday just before NOON features the dynamic Australian, keynote Speaker, Garry Ridge, who will kick off the conference in a great combination of Aussi and Albuquerque style!
Fellows and Past Presidents of our 34 year old organization will be specially honored at a Wine and Cheese Reception Thursday evening from 5:30-6:30 pm in a spectacular 19th floor room with a grand vista of the Sandia Mountains.
There’s more!!!! Watch out for Mike Harris asking for Session Volunteers and I may ask you for help at Albuquerque, too! Thursday, Friday and Saturday are very busy and the Social Event Saturday @ the Sandia Resort will be great!
But in the meantime, congratulations on your acceptance as an author/presenter and get ready to help us get “Business Aloft” in Albuquerque!

November 7, 2009 BOARD, SHOWCASE AND MENTOR NOMINATIONS DUE 11/15 Dear SBI members and friends, This is a friendly reminder regarding the various calls for nominations as mentioned in the third issue of Not Quite eMomentum on 10/22 and due 11/15:
Call for Board Nominations Bruce Kemelgor, Past President, chairs the nominations committee. He invites SBI members to self nominate or, after securing the person's agreement, nominate another. Nominations are sought for three positions: VP of Research and Publications, VP Program Chair-Elect, and one Director. Position descriptions and terms of office can be found on our SBI website -- click on "About SBI", then "SBI Officers' Playbook".
Nominations should be e-mailed to Bruce at bhkeme01@louisville.edu by November 15th. Elections will be conducted electronically by December 15th. Call for 2010 Showcase Award Nominations The Showcase Award recognizes the SBI Program and its Director for innovative development and management or contribution to a client success story. For detailed description and list of previous winners, please check the SBI website. Members are encouraged to submit nominations to Paul Belliveau, VP Marketing and Communications, at belliveau@att.net by 11/15. Previous winners and current SBI officers will vote electronically by 12/15. The Award(s) will be presented at our Albuquerque Conference in February.
Call for 2010 Homer L. Saunders Mentor Award Nominations The Homer L. Saunders Mentor Award recognizes a deserving SBI member for outstanding contribution to the training and development of an SBI Program Director. A detailed description of the award and a list of previous winners can be found on our website. Nominations should be emailed to Paul Belliveau at belliveau@att.net by November 15th. Previous winners and current SBI officers will vote electronically by 12/15. The Award will be presented in February at our Albuquerque Conference.

As we get closer to the Call for Papers deadline (September 10) for the 2010 Small Business Institute® Conference I would like to encourage you to consider submitting a paper, workshop, or best practice. The Program Committee (lead by Stephanie Bardwell) is in the process of planning an excellent conference in Albuquerque and we want you there. We realize that travel budgets are tight this year, but the SBI conference has a rich tradition of collegiality and is a great place to share research and teaching practices. In addition to paper submissions (or workshops & best practices), please consider serving as a session chair or part of a roundtable at the conference. If you are interested in any role with the conference please contact me ( harrismi@ecu.edu) or Stephanie ( Bardwell@cnu.edu).

Student Consulting Project of the Year Competition The Small Business Institute®'s Student Consulting Project of the Year Competition (formerly the SBI Case of the Year (COY) Competition) is open to SBI members and other college and university faculty. The submission deadline is Monday, September 14th. In addition to the new name, SBI is encouraging electronic submission for the first time this year. For more information, please review the Online Submission Guidelines.
NEW this year - The Student Consulting Project Competition is going GREEN! Electronic submission is now available and encouraged. See the Online Submission Guidelines for details. DON'T FORGET: The entry deadline for SBI Student Consulting Project Competition is the second Monday in September.

STUDENT PAPERS TRACK Student research papers are being solicited that are focused on issues related to field-based consulting and related business issues, including ethics, business practices, business leadership and/or any of the tracks in the conference. In particular, methodologies related to consulting, applications of business related concepts in small business environments, and unique perceptions of small business issues are encouraged. Student papers should identify the issue being examined and research designs should identify field-based consulting contemporary issue related to the topic; the paper should describe an appropriate [set of] hypotheses, use empirical methods to collect and test related data, and make supported conclusions regarding the issues. Only undergraduate and master’s level students are eligible, but up to four students may participate on each paper.
The DEADLINE for Student Paper submissions is NOVEMBER 1, 2009 –
ALL STUDENT PAPERS MUST BE SAVED as .doc file and NAMED AS FOLLOWS: StudentPaperTitleof Paper.doc
For example, if Jessica writes a student paper about Small Business Tax Issues in Consulting Projects, she would name it as follows: StudentPaperSmallBusinessTaxIssuesinConsulitng.doc
SPECIAL NOTE: WE WILL HOST A SPECIAL RECEPTION FRIDAY EVENING at the CONFERENCE TO HONOR THE STUDENTS who submit the BEST STUDENT PAPERS and THE WINNERS of the BEST STUDENT PAPER COMPETITON will receive an AWARD.

After almost 35 years as an all-volunteer run organization, we are very pleased to announce that SBI has taken the next step in growing the organization by hiring a professional association management firm to provide a home base for our operations.
Affinity Resource Group, LLC (ARG) will oversee SBI’s day-to-day administrative operations. Our volunteer officers and board members will continue to oversee and coordinate the annual conference, finances, case of the year competition, publications, and other valuable features of your SBI membership.
